Campus Safety: Know Before You Go!

It’s shocking to think that 20% - 25% percent of college women are raped during their collegecareer, and that most victims of sexual violence were assaulted by someone they knew.

Sexual assault is a very serious problem on college campuses.  Parents and students need to be informed on the dangers and prevalence of sexual assault, and  also of the school’s protocol for when a sexual assault occurs.

On the evening of June 10, The Center hosted, "Know Before You Go:   How to Stay Safe on College Campuses" at the University of Connecticut/Stamford Campus.  Presenters included: two survivors of sexual assault, interviewed by Rebecca Surran (anchor, News12 Connecticut); Ingrid Semaan (Director of Women’s Studies, UCONN/Stamford); Larry M. Rosenberg, PhD (Clinical Director for Child Guidance Center); Campus Security Directors from Norwalk Community College (Barbara Smith) and University of Connecticut (Commander Walter Young and Lieutenant Chris Casa).

Parents and students heard from this group of experts about what they need to know about the safety risks that are present on college campuses, and cautioned that parent and students need to be aware of how the college handles alcohol and drug consumption, campus and party safety, crime and sexual assault.

Volunteers Kick Up their Heels to Support The Center

The Center's volunteer Whitney Franklin and her colleagues from UBS participated in the "Run for The Center Minute Man Race," sponsored by the Westport Young Woman's League, a 5K/10K Run/Walk at Westport's beautiful Compo Beach on May 2nd.  All fundraising efforts for the team went towards the The Center.

Whitney noted, "The Center has been hit hard by the financial crisis and I want to help ensure they are able to continue providing services to our community.  I am looking for friends, family and community members to join my team and/or pass this message along to friends or colleagues who may be interested in joining my team or supporting this cause."

The team was great!!!

Raise Your Glass, Raise Awareness Gala

Nearly 200 guests enjoyed a “A Tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood” at the 5th Annual “Raise Your Glass, Raise Awareness” fundraising event to benefit The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education (“The Center”).  The event took place on Friday, April 23rd at the Stamford home of Michele and Kevin Segalla.  It coincided with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is recognized nationally each April.

Following this year’s theme, “A Tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood,” guests started their evening with a walk down the red carpet and had the opportunity to pose for the paparazzi (with photographers generously donated by Stamford’s Jack Dog Studio).  Then, it was on to a champagne welcome, as music from the Tom Smith Big Band filled the air.  The evening featured a signature cocktail from St-Germain, with a selection of wonderful food and wine presented by David’s Soundview Catering, napa & co., Dichello Distributors and the Stamford Mariott.

Under the skillful direction of auctioneer Alan Kalter (announcer for Late Show with David Letterman), guests bid on a wonderful array of auction items including a four-night Nantucket Getaway,   a New York City Extravaganza, a four-night stay at Stratton Mountain Village, a picnic on a 55ft custom fractional Rigged sloop with crew --  and more!

All agreed it was a great night!
